Intracranial pressure (ICP) is the pressure exerted by the brain tissue on the inside of the skull and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain. ICP monitoring is a procedure used to measure this pressure. It is usually done when there is a need to monitor changes in ICP, such as when a person has a head injury, stroke, or tumor.
There are two main types of ICP monitors: intraparenchymal monitors and ventricular monitors. Intraparenchymal monitors are placed directly into the brain tissue, while ventricular monitors are placed into the ventricles, which are cavities in the brain that contain cerebrospinal fluid.
The most common symptom of raised ICP is a headache. Other symptoms can include vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, seizures, and coma. In some cases, raised ICP can lead to death.
ICUs are increasingly adopting ICP monitoring as it provides real-time data on trends in cerebral perfusion pressures which helps guide therapy and improve patient outcomes.
